In a busy trauma ICU, you don’t get time to hesitate. I worked as a critical care nurse in a regional burn center, where one decision could mean the difference between life and death. That’s where I forged my instincts under pressure, where I became calm in chaos, and where I learned: being ready isn’t optional. It’s everything.

But survival didn’t start in the hospital.

It started in the woods with my dad: hunting, fishing, and learning what it meant to feed yourself while respecting natural rhythms. It deepened during increasingly common Southern winters when ice storms knocked out power for days. I learned how to stay warm without heat, cook without electricity, and care for my young son while the world outside was frozen. Later, I found myself navigating a divorce, raising a curious preschooler, going through nursing school with barely enough to live on, commuting to school and work without a car, and still somehow paying bills, keeping dinner on the table, and showing up for class.

Those years weren’t easy. But they taught me what truly matters: resilience isn’t found in a stockpile. It’s built in your body, your budget, and your mindset.
